Example of a Higher Education Engagement: In an effort to provide sophomores with an exceptional personal development experience during their second year of higher education, a series of two day “life entrepreneurship” retreats are offered. Titled “Leading an Entrepreneurial Life,” the retreats expose participating students to essential entrepreneurial principles and charge them with applying those principles—and the entrepreneurial mindset—to their life path and academic career. Drawing on the book Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary People Creating Extraordinary Lives (by Christopher Gergen and Gregg Vanourek; Jossey-Bass; March 2008), the retreats are followed by peer-led monthly meetings. The sophomore retreats align with campus academic advising and career development efforts, and extend into students’ junior- and senior-year experiences.

The purpose of the retreats is to expose students to the entrepreneurial life in engaging and meaningful ways to help them choose the steps on their life path deliberately—especially in the context of their remaining years in college. This work will also set the foundation for students to understand how ideas can be brought to life through entrepreneurial action. Inherent to this pursuit is a spirit of reflection, opportunity recognition, innovation, resourcefulness, risk-taking, adaptive persistence, and renewal. Retreat activities will include visioning, goal- and strategy-setting, and personal development.

The goals for the retreat are as follows:

  • Introducing the entrepreneurial mindset to sophomores and motivating each participating student to create a personalized "Entrepreneurial Life Plan" (ELP);
  • Inducing students to map out their academic and personal goals for the academic year and for their entire academic career;
  • Switching students on to the wide range of opportunities for social and professional impact;
  • Building a strong network of friendship and support among peer groups;
  • Increasing personal accountability and a sense of purpose and direction among students;
  • Providing a dynamic leadership experience for juniors and seniors who help facilitate the experience;
  • Generating excitement about entrepreneurship and leadership among all participating students.
